Background:
The life of a College Dropout
Personality:
Optimus is a true optimist, hence his name. He always believes that things will get better, that there is always a bright side to things even when everything is looking grim and dangerous. Even if the odds are against him, he’ll forge forward and give it everything he has, and giving up is almost never an option. Optimus believes wholeheartedly in the power of
If there’s one thing in life Optimus wants to do, it’s helping people. He enjoys expressing his kindness to anyone whether they accept it or not, and he likes to be very persistent about it too
Being rather young in Autobot terms, Optimus is understandably, naive, idealistic, and inexperienced with many things, though he believes that he’s prepared to face most challenges. While he was still in the Autobot Academy, he was a prime example of a good student, and had a particular interest in Cybertron’s history and stories about the great war, which ended before his time. At the beginning of the series, he still partially believed that there was some glory to be found in war, and that he could have proved himself to be a hero during it. After he died protecting the allspark (and was brought back a few moments later), Optimus began to realize that there is a lot more to being a hero than being brave and giving speeches. As the series progressed, Optimus also began to learn that the world isn’t divided cleanly in colours of black and white: Decepticons aren’t always bad, and Autobots aren’t always good.
Funny thing with Optimus, he has a bit of a love/hate relationship with rules and authority. On the one servo, he believes that both are very important for keeping other bots in line and making sure society doesn’t fall into chaos. On a normal day, Optimus sticks rigidly to the rules and obeys orders from higher authority to the point of earning the honorary title of “Stick in the Mud”. On the other servo... screw the rules and authority, there are lives at stake. If certain rules, or even higher authority figures get in the way of saving lives, Optimus will break said rules and defy said authority to do what he believes is right. He’ll accept the consequences (whether he deserves them or not) for his actions afterwards with his usual humble grace.
Optimus’s relationship with his team is very important to him. Even though the five of them were stragglers and misfits that were pretty much put on the spacebridge repair duty (a lowly dead-end job) to stay out of everyone else’s way, Optimus still regards his team fondly, and does his best to get to know them. It was easier for him as a leader to utilize their strengths and work around or through their weaknesses if he knew what they were. Optimus truly believes that he has the finest team one can have, and puts his faith in all of them. His patience with them, while great, has its limits though, and he does occasionally lose his temper when they directly obey orders or unnecessarily put themselves in danger.
Emotionally and mentally, Optimus’s biggest weaknesses are his lack of self-confidence, and his preoccupation with his own failures. In his mind, he is one huge failure, and he deserves everything that has happened to him. The loss of Elita-1 and the dislike he gets from his former friend, Sentinel Prime, has its toll on him. Optimus has the tendency to blame himself when things go wrong, whether it’s his own fault or not, and always wants to fix things even when it seems like it can’t be fixed. He doesn’t believe that he’s anything special, even after what he’s done, and he tends to undervalue his own contributions to his team’s success.
Abilities:
Optimus’s leadership skills were obvious from the start when he entered the academy, they attracted the attention of Ultra Magnus (the Supreme Commander of the Autobots) and greatly impressed him. During his stay at the Autobot Academy, Optimus learned many maneuvers, fighting skills, and other military related things. During a virtual test that pitted him against Megatron, young(er) Optimus came dangerously close to defeating him using his own wits, resources, and courage. He still ended up getting stabbed through the chest though, therefore ending the simulation. Sentinel’s laughter and jeering remarks (they were friends at the time) were quickly stifled by Ultra Magnus stating that Optimus had just achieved the highest marks in Autobot history.
As for weapons... he doesn’t really have any, besides his axe. What he has are more tools than anything. His energon axe is capable of cutting through many tough objects, able to extend so that he can use it both as a one handed or a two handed weapon, and has a rocket on it, making it his main weapon of choice. Other things he has are his grappling hooks he can fire from both arms, a net, bolos, and foam for putting out fires, all of these he has stored in his body in various places.
Also he can transform into a firetruck... which is pretty handy.

Becoming one of the heroes of Detroit had been a complete accident. Optimus never expected to be given an opportunity to rise above the menial task of the Prime of a lowly space-bridge repair crew. While he may have been given the rank of a Prime, he had been set on one of the most dead-end jobs one could get. Here in Detroit he helped protect the weak and save the innocent, something he had dreamed of doing when he was merely a young Cadet at the Academy. Here in Detroit he had felt more at home than he had ever felt back on Cybertron, because it was here that he had a purpose, and was surrounded by bots he cared deeply about, and who cared about him in return.
Yet he could never get used to dealing with the press. On the one servo, he was pleased at the attention and being given the chance to show off his public speaking skills. On the other, he had to be extremely careful of what he said, because there was always a chance it’d come back and bite him when he least expected it to. It kept things interesting either way, and Optimus didn’t really mind it at all.
Flash
He blinked, but kept his composure as a particularly bold photographer had scaled a staircase and had taken a picture mere feet away from his face. After months of practice, he was able to continue answering the question one of the big-named newspaper was asking him despite the startling interruption. The reporter in question was asking him about their recent fire rescue, and about the dangers the Autobots experienced while on the job. Optimus answered to the best of his ability, describing the rescue briskly before saying that the Autobots were happy to keep the people of Detroit safe from harm. It was their job to protect life, and the humans were life.
That always got a positive reaction.
So he did what he had to do to keep both his team and the humans of Detroit safe. In a way it felt like he was trying to repay the world for what he did, or what he had failed to do. Optimus wanted, so badly, for things to go right, and for them all to be happy. Being optimistic by nature, he was determined to believe that the future was brighter than it had been in a very long time, and that he and his team would forge forward and make a bright future for them all.

Appearance:
Age: Somewhere in his twenties....in Autobot years.
Gender: Male
Personality:
Optimus likes to believe that the situation can get better if enough time and effort is put into it. In fact, his optimism is why he received the name Optimus to begin with. He takes any job very seriously, no matter how lowly that job may appear to others like Sentinel Prime. He knows that he has messed up in the past, and tries very hard to avoid making any such mistakes over again. Leading a space-bridge repair crew was a far cry from what he was expecting as a young bot, but someone has to do it, and Optimus doesn’t resenttoo much that he’s that someone. He possess a very kind nature and he enjoys helping out others in need when he can. He likes being one of Detroit’s “semi-official” hero not so much for the glory (though that does have a part in it) but because helping people is part of his programming.
Optimus is a natural born leader and most other bots recognize this, even Ultra Magnus when Optimus was still going to the Academy. He’s well aware that he’s no match for most Decepticons that they come across, and attempts to use his team’s skills the best he can. When fighting Decepticons, he prefers not to strike head on, instead he tries to perform a sneak attack from behind with his axe. Although he is a very patient person, he is certainly not without his limits. Sometimes his team frustrates him with their tendency to disobey orders and sneak off like a bunch of teen-bots.
Being rather young, for an Autobot, Optimus is still rather naive and idealistic when it comes to... well a lot of things. The entirety of his field experience comes almost completely from his time on Earth defending Detroit from Decepticons and human criminals.. In theory he knows what to do in most situations, but sometimes theories don’t work when put into practice. Despite his attitude, Optimus does not have the highest self-confidence one can have. He often second-guesses his decisions and sometimes even questions his own leadership abilities. Being told by Utlra Magnus himself that Optimus doesn’t have being a hero in his programming doesn’t help with anything.
Backstory: Once upon a time Optimus was a star student in the Autobot Academy, and was almost guaranteed a place in the Elite Guard due to his skill and leadership abilities. One day Sentinel convinced Optimus and their friend Elita-1 to travel to an organic planet in search for a downed Decepticon ship with energon in its cargo. Organic worlds are forbidden to Autobots, so them going there was highly illegal, something Optimus knew but he went along with it anyway. Someone had to keep an eye on them after all.
Things went well... until the three of them fell into a deep cavern filled with giant spiders. They quickly realized while fighting them that they were way over their heads and tried to retreat, Optimus becoming separated from the others in the progress. Being the lucky bot he was, Optimus found the energon that they had originally come to the planet for and was found by Elita-1 not long after. The two of them were attacked by giant spiders, so Optimus decided to cause a few energon cubes to blow up so that they could escape. Optimus was able to get out safetly, but Elita-1 fell back into the pit of spiders. Knowing that he could not save her, Optimus grabbed Sentinel and dragged him away from the ship as it exploded, leaving them both being unable to locate her signal and they assumed that she was dead.
When they returned to Cybertron, they were brought before Ultra Magnus, and Optimus took all the blame for both what happened to Elita-1 and for being on the planet to begin with. Rather than booting Optimus off the force all together, Ultra Magnus gave Optimus the Prime title and allowed him to command a ship and crew of his own. He just didn’t mention right away that it would be a inexperienced repair crew.
Somewhat resigned to his fate to never become a true hero, Optimus spent the next few stellar cycles repairing space bridges and knocking away rocks from them. It was a complete surprise to him and his crew when they stumbled across the AllSpark, a powerful item that was one of the three main things that had helped the Autobots win the war for Cybertron. Not long after this particular discovery, they ran into Megatron, the feared Decepticon leader himself. Their fight over the AllSpark took them into Earths atmosphere, and caused all of them to crash land. Megatron's head ended up practically in the backyard of Isaac Sumdac, while the Autobots ended up at the bottom of Lake Eerie for fifty years.
Moral Standing: Good
Dreams: Of becoming someone Cybertron can depend on. Keeping his team and Earth safe from danger.
Fears:Spiders Failing his team and Cybertron.
