CHARACTER INFO
Name: Optimus Prime
Canon: Transformers: Animated

Gender: Male

Appearance:

Robot form

Optimus in his robot form is somewhere between 18-20 ft tall.

Look he’s a firetruck

Background: Transformers wiki page.

Personality:

Optimus is a true optimist, hence his name. He always believes that things will get better, that there is always a bright side to things even when everything is looking grim and dangerous. Even if the odds are against him, he’ll forge forward and give it everything he has, and giving up is almost never an option. Optimus believes wholeheartedly in the power of friendship teamwork, and isn’t above giving long-winded speeches to inspire his team (though his team mostly expresses a certain amount of exasperation at it). When given a job, Optimus will work at it with the focus and dedication that had made him the Autobot Academy’s star student. Being the overachiever he is, it doesn’t matter how big, or how small the job is, if it’s given to Optimus, rest assured that it will be done to the best of his ability.

If there’s one thing in life Optimus wants to do, it’s helping people. He enjoys expressing his kindness to anyone whether they accept it or not, and he likes to be very persistent about it too like an obnoxiously nice boyscout. While glory would be nice, it’s merely a side-note to the satisfaction of helping and protecting the innocent. Still, Optimus would be lying if he said that the occasional daydream of him becoming the hero of Cybertron, and having the Autobots look up to him never crosses his mind. Even the thought of maybe possibly someday becoming a Magnus had crossed his mind too. But hah, Optimus Prime, leader of all the Autobots? Like that would ever happen. Oh well, he’s allowed to dream, right?

Being rather young in Autobot terms, Optimus is understandably, naive, idealistic, and inexperienced with many things, though he believes that he’s prepared to face most challenges. While he was still in the Autobot Academy, he was a prime example of a good student, and had a particular interest in Cybertron’s history and stories about the great war, which ended before his time. At the beginning of the series, he still partially believed that there was some glory to be found in war, and that he could have proved himself to be a hero during it. After he died protecting the allspark (and was brought back a few moments later), Optimus began to realize that there is a lot more to being a hero than being brave and giving speeches. As the series progressed, Optimus also began to learn that the world isn’t divided cleanly in colours of black and white: Decepticons aren’t always bad, and Autobots aren’t always good.

Funny thing with Optimus, he has a bit of a love/hate relationship with rules and authority. On the one servo, he believes that both are very important for keeping other bots in line and making sure society doesn’t fall into chaos. On a normal day, Optimus sticks rigidly to the rules and obeys orders from higher authority to the point of earning the honorary title of “Stick in the Mud”. On the other servo... screw the rules and authority, there are lives at stake. If certain rules, or even higher authority figures get in the way of saving lives, Optimus will break said rules and defy said authority to do what he believes is right. He’ll accept the consequences (whether he deserves them or not) for his actions afterwards with his usual humble grace.

Optimus’s relationship with his team is very important to him. Even though the five of them were stragglers and misfits that were pretty much put on the spacebridge repair duty (a lowly dead-end job) to stay out of everyone else’s way, Optimus still regards his team fondly, and does his best to get to know them. It was easier for him as a leader to utilize their strengths and work around or through their weaknesses if he knew what they were. Optimus truly believes that he has the finest team one can have, and puts his faith in all of them. His patience with them, while great, has its limits though, and he does occasionally lose his temper when they directly obey orders or unnecessarily put themselves in danger.

Abilities/Strengths:

Optimus’s leadership skills were obvious from the start when he entered the academy, they attracted the attention of Ultra Magnus (the Supreme Commander of the Autobots) and greatly impressed him. During his stay at the Autobot Academy, Optimus learned many maneuvers, fighting skills, and other military related things. During a virtual test that pitted him against Megatron, young(er) Optimus came dangerously close to defeating him using his own wits, resources, and courage. He still ended up getting stabbed through the chest though, therefore ending the simulation. Sentinel’s laughter and jeering remarks (they were friends at the time) were quickly stifled by Ultra Magnus stating that Optimus had just achieved the highest marks in Autobot history.

As for weapons... he doesn’t really have any, besides his axe. What he has are more tools than anything. His energon axe is capable of cutting through many tough objects, able to extend so that he can use it both as a one handed or a two handed weapon, and has a rocket on it, making it his main weapon of choice. Other things he has are his grappling hooks he can fire from both arms, a net, bolos, and foam for putting out fires, all of these he has stored in his body in various places.

Also he can transform into a firetruck... which is pretty handy.

Weaknesses: Emotionally and mentally, Optimus’s biggest weaknesses are his lack of self-confidence, and his preoccupation with his own failures. In his mind, he is one huge failure, and he deserves everything that has happened to him. The loss of Elita-1 and the dislike he gets from his former friend, Sentinel Prime, has its toll on him. Optimus has the tendency to blame himself when things go wrong, whether it’s his own fault or not, and always wants to fix things even when it seems like it can’t be fixed. He doesn’t believe that he’s anything special, even after what he’s done, and he tends to undervalue his own contributions to his team’s success.

Physically, Optimus is normal sized for an Autobot, but very, very small compared to the Decepticons. Meaning that he gets tossed around a lot if faced with a Decepticon foe. His fighting skill, while good, is very straightforward and by the book, meaning that more skilled warriors can defeat him. Optimus lacks field experience, and often has to learn how to do things the hard way. It should be mentioned that Optimus has a fear of spiders. Especially large purple ones that could possibly tear him to pieces.

Optimus also doesn’t understand how art works. He believes that all art needs to have captions because he has no idea what’s going on in them. That counts as a weakness, yes?

Defining Quote(s):

“Autobots, Transform and roll out!”

Action Writing Sample:

[Of all the strange things that happens to him on a regular basis, waking up at the foot of a massive tree is certainly way up there. He groans and sits up, rubbing his head and glancing around. Well, if he’s going to mysteriously wake up somewhere he doesn’t recognize, at least it’s a pretty place to be. Optimus allows himself to enjoy the peaceful feeling it gives him, before standing up and getting down to business.

There’s nothing remotely threatening about his surroundings, but he doesn’t let his guard down anyway. Something brought him here, and he’s going to find out who it is. Upon his examinations, he notices an odd little device on the ground. Hm, this looks like it could have been made by humans... except enlarged to fit his size. Well, that’s considerate of them! Assuming that he isn’t here for some nefarious purpose that is.

He doesn’t use it right away, instead he attempts to detect his team’s signal. The young Prime tries several times, scrolling through several frequencies, but he finds nothing. Optimus doesn’t believe that they can’t function without him, but he does like to be around to make sure nothing happens to them. Where are they? Are they okay? He prays to Primus that they’re all alright and that he’s the only one who’s in some kind of trouble. Better him than them after all.

Now, this communicator. Blue optics narrow at it as he examines it carefully before turning it on. Having come from a world where the fact that he’s a giant alien robot is largely accepted, it doesn’t occur to him that he should hide his appearance in the slightest.
]

Greetings, my name is Optimus Prime, and I don’t mean to be rude, but I shouldn’t be here. Has anyone seen my team? They’re like me except... they’re different.

[So descriptive Prime, try again.]

Where am I? I’m not in Detroit anymore am I?

Third Person Writing Sample:

Becoming one of the heroes of Detroit had been a complete accident. Optimus never expected to be given an opportunity to rise above the menial task of the Prime of a lowly space-bridge repair crew. While he may have been given the rank of a Prime, he had been set on one of the most dead-end jobs one could get. Here in Detroit he helped protect the weak and save the innocent, something he had dreamed of doing when he was merely a young Cadet at the Academy. Here in Detroit he had felt more at home than he had ever felt back on Cybertron, because it was here that he had a purpose, and was surrounded by bots he cared deeply about, and who cared about him in return.

There were times when he would quietly questions his worth, and he found himself wondering how much longer he could go with this before he messed it up somehow. He had messed up so badly in the past, what’s to stop him from messing up again in the future? All it would take is one mistake, just one, and everything would come crashing down on him again. If that did happen again, than he was determined that it would happen to him, and him alone. None of his friends should have to suffer through his failures... he refused to let that happen.

So he did what he had to do to keep both his team and the humans of Detroit safe. In a way it felt like he was trying to repay the world for what he did, or what he had failed to do. Optimus wanted, so badly, for things to go right, and for them all to be happy. Being optimistic by nature, he was determined to believe that the future was brighter than it had been in a very long time, and that he and his team would forge forward and make a bright future for them all.
